transport protocol exchange group (automotive) (TPEG)

Transport Protocol Exchange Group (TPEG) is a project of the European Broadcasting Union( EBU) to introduce TPEG as a traffic and travel information service.

The TPEG format is to become the transmission format for coded traffic messages and can be integrated into navigation systems. The system has a much higher resolution than the digital traffic radio( TMC), whose existing traffic information is converted into the TPEG format. Due to the higher resolution, TPEG can process traffic congestion and accident reports on highways as well as inner-city information, for example about the occupancy of parking garages; it can also process weather reports or general timetable information for flights, ships and trains.

TPEG information can be read by displays, PDAs, cell phones and other terminals. They are based on a structured description of a location, route or area and are composed of message management information, event information and location information.

TPEG can be distributed via digital audio broadcasting( DAB), DRM radio, the Internet, or other existing carrier systems. Connectionless User Datagram Protocol ( UDP) can be used for data transmission, which operates without a return channel. The display is done on PDAs, cell phones or navigation devices. The TPEG system can provide traffic messages using speech synthesis as voice information, as visualized graphics, and as information updates for navigation systems. It provides accurate localization and can be used for other location-based messages. TPEGautomotive is an enhanced service for dynamic route planning compared to digital traffic broadcasting (TMC).
