mobile location protocol (location) (MLP)

The Mobile Location Protocol(MLP) is a Location Services ( LCS) and Location Based Services ( LBS) protocol specified by the Location Interoperability Forum ( LIF) and standardized by the Open Mobile Alliance ( OMA), which forms the interface between the location server and location-based services. It is an application-aware protocol that supports positioning ofmobile stations( MS), from cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, and WLAN devices, independent of the underlying network technology.

In the MLP protocol, the transport layer is formed by the Transport Layer Mapping and describes which protocols are used to transport the XML content. The data is described in Extensible Markup Language (XML) and transported using HTTP, the Wireless Session Protocol( WSP) or the Simple Object Access Protocol( SOAP). The element layer, which uses the elements of the various services, is built on top of this layer.

The elements used by the services include Basic Common Elements and Advanced Common Elements. The Document Type Definitions( DTD) include identification, functional, location elements, but also those for results, positional accuracy and for content.

The MLP Services

This top level of the MLP layer model determines the actual MLP service. The basic MLP services defined by 3GPP include the Standard Location Immediate Service( SLIS), which communicates the location of the mobile user upon client request. Furthermore, the Emergency Location Immediate Service( ELIS), which communicates the user position to the client upon request in case of emergency, the Standard Location Reporting Service (SLRS), which communicates the position of the mobile subscriber upon request of a user, the Emergency Location Reporting Service( ELRS), where the user position is communicated in case of emergency, the Triggered Location Reporting Service( TLRS), where the position of the mobile subscriber is communicated due to an event and the Historic Location Immediate Service( HLIS), with the time sequence.
